Trade shows are something in which businesses participate for one very crucial reason: to market their company, no more, no less. While the environment is small in scale in comparison to the business world at large, it offers companies the ability for targeted marketing; perhaps the company is participating in a trade show for a specific industry or a show that promotes all industries within a particular region. Whatever the theme or purpose of the trade show, it is essential that participants come prepared and ready to market their company aggressively and creatively. This is where trade show marketing skills come into play.

Creativity is essential under these circumstances simply because of the competitive nature of the event. Trade show participants are given trade show booths – their “home” in which to set up shop during the duration of their participation. The focus then becomes attracting the attention of passerby – those who are attending the trade show – enough so that they are inclined to stop and talk to a representative for your company. This is not to say, however, that marketing to other participants should be ignored; after all, being recognized within the industry by your peers is half the battle for any company. There may be instances where two companies could work together on one project or where you are able to provide a service that they are not able to provide and vice versa. Put simply, it pays to have other companies familiar with you and your work.

* Starting with the highest end trade show displays you can afford. Trade show displays are not to be skimped on; they are the most important component in a company’s successful participation in a trade show. Understand what you are promoting and how it can best be presented – banner stands, flat panel exhibits, the use of multimedia including flat screen televisions, literature stands, etc. High-end companies that customize and build quality trade show exhibits are absolutely critical to a company’s success at a trade show. Don’t think of it as a throwaway exhibit because it’s not; look at it for what it is – an investment in your company and a high-quality, branded marketing piece that you will have for years and years to come.
